Thousands of years ago in India was born a way of thinking about music which is
uniquely simple and has developed into one the great artistic treasures of
mankind. In addition, it is a spiritual path: a devotional yoga. Based on the in
ideas of raga (melody) and tala (rhythm), the music is said to be Nada-Brahma ,
“the language of God”
From medieval times, when the Hindu and Moslem cultures were blended in North
India,
the music developed a character, depth, and luster now being recognized the
world over.
The roots of the tradition extend back four thousand years. It has been passed
on orally from teacher to student through a great chain of masters, beginning
with the rishis (sages) of Vedic times through the 20th Century genirs of
allauddin Khan. This Later giant in the music was a revitalizing force who
collected the literature, played some two hundred instruments, and trained
several of the greatest living masters of the music. Among these are his son,
Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, with the advance of transportation and technology, has
continued to bring the ancient music of India into worldwide prominence and
esteem.
Dear Listener,
My father first began to teach me vocal music when I was there years old. For
over twenty years, I practiced from dawn until late into the evening under his
strict and constant guidance. I then began performing throughout India and
abroad I became the court musician for the Maharaj of Jodhpur. It was here that
I First began to dream of building a center devoted to the classical arts of
India. In 1956, I opened my first college in Calcutta. Later in 1968, I moved to
California and opened the Ali Akbar College of music where I still reside and
teach today. My Father told me to spread this music “as far as you can see
the sun and moon.”
I am very glad to release this recording through Oriental Records and I hope it
will help then to continue our common work of spreading this precious music.
Yours truly,
Ali Akbar Khan
