Feather Bed One of the most individual of all altoists (and one of the few in the 1950s who did not sound like a cousin of Charlie Parker), the cool-toned Lee Konitz has always had a strong musical curiosity, leading him to consistently take chances and stretch himself. This session, with Ted Brown, holds some pleasant surprises. Altoist Lee Konitz (who doubles on soprano) teams up with tenor saxophonist Ted Brown, pianist Albert Dailey, bassist Rufus Reid, and drummer Joe Chambers for this session. The six songs (originals based on standards by Konitz, Brown, and Lennie Tristano) were all performed in one take and although there are a few minor mistakes, the music is quite exciting and spontaneous. Brown was the best possible substitute for Wayne Marsh (Konitzs original choice for the record) and sounds in prime form. Its worth acquiring by fans of straight-ahead jazz, Lennie Tristano, and Lee Konitz. (Scott Yanow, AMG)
