Miles Dewey Davis III (1926-1991) was one of the most influential (jazz)
musicians of the 20th century, next to Duke Ellington. He was not the most
virtuosos trumpet player in Modern Jazz, but had a lifelong mentality of
innovation, which never left him satisfied with what he achieved, but constantly
kept himself open to new musical challenges, which always triggered impulses
that volcanically erupted unto the international jazz scene. Among his many
qualities was Davis ability to attract the best musicians for his bands and
record projects time and again. As a very young musician he already came under
the wings of the greatest of Modern Jazz pioneers: Charlie Parker, Dizzy
Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. When Davis formed his own bands in the 1950s, he
remained true to Parkers and Gillespies concept of saxophone and trumpet plus
rhythm section until his electric phase in the late sixties. This compilation is
dedicated to the most important tenor saxophonists with whom Davis created and
kept on developing his innovative quintet-sound. Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane
and Wayne Shorter were without a doubt the most important partners for Davis,
the ones who challenged him the most and provided the most frequent and creative
submissions. Their colleagues Hank Mobley and Lucky Thompson were also great
masters and musical individualists, as you can hear on recordings with and
without Miles in this set, for instance with other great trumpeters like Freddie
Hubbard.
