A charmingly over-the-top comedic score from composer George Fenton, Were No
Angels channels the spirit of the swing era to create music of uncommon energy
and freewheeling verve. Fenton indulges in pure bombast here, and the results
are delightful -- every theme teeters on the brink of caricature, but the
composers affection for his source material (everything from vintage field
recordings to Bernard Herrmann) keeps the music in check. This rare release was
one of the final entries in Varese Sarabandes first limited-edition soundtrack
club series -- its probably not worth the obscene sums it commands on the
secondary market, but collectors lucky enough to stumble upon a copy should give
it serious consideration.
