Tracks list

This Limited Edition Box Set contains 6 great jazz albums from Verve, Riverside
and Blue Note including: Wynton Kelly/Kelly Blue, Bill Evans Trio/Waltz For
Debby, Wes Montgomery/Full House, Bud Powell/The Scene Changes, Lee Morgan/The
Sidewinder, and The Oscar Peterson Trio/We Get Requests.

Wynton Kelly/Kelly Blue: Respected by his peers as a pianist of remarkable
creativity and feeling, Wynton Kellys own stardom was on hold until 1959, when
he got a call from Miles Davis and joined one of the most important small bands
in jazz. The same year, Kelly recorded Kelly Blue for Riverside. The albums
critical notices and popularity combined with his Davis exposure to bring Kelly
general recognition. Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, his section mates from Daviss
group, round out the rhythm section. Nat Adderley, Benny Golson and Bobby Jaspar
join for two memorable tracks. Throughout, Kelly cultivates the blues atmosphere
that makes the collection one of his finest.

Bill Evans Trio/Waltz For Debby: This is the second of two Riverside albums made
up of selections recorded by the classic Bill Evans, Scott LaFaro, and Paul
Motian trio at their legendary live recording session of June 25, 1961. The
dozen chosen performances were subdivided to enable the first album released to
feature LaFaro--who died in an auto accident just ten days after recording. Thus
this second collection can fairly be said to present a more typical overview of
this remarkable unit at work.

Wes Montgomery/Full House: Recorded during an actual performance at Tsubo in
Berkeley, California on June 25, 1962, and released on the Riverside label, the
blistering performances showcased Wess guitar with the top-notch support of
Miles Daviss rhythm section. Featuring Johnny Griffin, Wynton Kelly, Paul
Chambers & Jimmy Cobb, this recording shows how Wes Montgomery profoundly
influenced & permanently changed virtually every jazz guitarist thereafter.

Bud Powell/The Scene Changes: Recorded in 1958 for Blue Note Records with Paul
Chambers and Art Taylor, The Scene Changes is one of Bud Powells finest
recordings, featuring Powell at the peak of his powers. In prime form, playing
one brilliant solo after another, this is a classic jazz trio album by one of
the great jazz pianists of all time.

Lee Morgan/Sidewinder: Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in 1963 and released on
Blue Note, The Sidewinder was a runaway hit that reached number 25 on the
Billboard chart. The title track, now a jazz standard, is one of the most
influential recordings in soul jazz. All five tracks were written by Morgan and
the album features respected tenor sax player Joe Henderson.

The Oscar Peterson Trio/We Get Requests: This 1964 studio session released on
the Verve label features the Peterson trio with bassist Ray Brown and Ed
Thigpen, a group that had been together for five years by then and performed
like a well-oiled machine. The repertoire is mostly pop songs of the day,
including bossa nova tunes and film themes, and the treatments are fairly brief,
with emphasis placed squarely on the melodies. Even in their lightest moments,
though, the group demonstrates some of the qualities that made it among the most
influential piano trios in jazz, a group that could generate tremendous rhythmic
energy and a sense of developing musical detail.
