Composer Alex North was nominated for an Oscar 15 times but never won until he
was given the lifetime achievement award in 1986. Among his many compositions
are the soundtracks for Spartacus, Cleopatra, The Agony & The Ecstacy, and this
1958 documentary produced for the widescreen Cinerama theaters. Originally
recorded in Cinerama 7-track sound, this soundtrack is a large and sweeping
score using native rhythms and moods. Its grand and ornate, as if North was
painting a portrait of his impressions of the islands of the South Seas. His
brush: the baton. His canvas: the 97 piece Cinerama Symphony Orchestra.
