Crucial and long-overdue survey of B-More club’s early years,
spotlighting its development from a weird cousin of UK hardcore and early
vehicle for Karizma, to one of regional US dance music’s most distinctive
sounds, as heard on TV series The Wire While B-More has been on international
club radars since the wave of Hollertronix et al and Diplo or A-Trak edits in
the mid ‘00s, and more recently in the UK productions of Finn and the
Night Slugs crew, it has so far escaped this sort of historic compilation
survey. Unruly Records do us all a favour with this first volume of 3 bursting
at the seams with bangers by pioneers such as Scottie B and Griff-Man plus the
less known but no less killer likes of K-Man, Blunted Dummies, or DJ Class. With
a DNA recognisable as much to UK hardcore heads as cunty ballroom and Jersey
club fiends, B-More basically shares all their urges to rudely bang a room, but
with a particularly brusque and upfront nature that sets it apart. Quite simply,
if these tunes don’t catch fire in a club it’s them, not you,
that’s fucked. We direct thee to clear echoes of early Shut Up and Dance
breakbeat skank in Blunted Dummies’ call-and-response trigger
‘Booty Mission’, and to the wickedly crude, early Chicago-like
choppiness of ‘Break It Down’ by DJ Griff-Man, plus a rowdy
prototype for ballroom in the Ha-stabbed ’To ‘Da Rhythm’ by
DJ Booman, or ‘Whatzup? Whatzup? (How You wanna Carry It)’ from
Miss Tony aka Big Tony, and last but not least Scottie B (whose Paul Simon edit
we still rinse) on the buck wild edit of K-Man’s ‘Blow’.
