Pat Boone comes through with a good showing on Great Hits of 1965. The album
would be worthy enough if for only four or five of its best songs. But, in view
of the fact that nearly every track admirably displays a facet of his many-sided
talent, it would not be an overstatement to suggest that this work stands ahead
of every other album he recorded during the previous two years. He discharges a
broad variety of popular music styles and puts his unique imprint on each one.
"England Swings" and "King of the Road" — two Roger Miller songs —
are presented smoothly and supplely, and are great fun. So is "Flowers on the
Wall," done in Boone's jesting, yet wholly committed way. His rendering of "I
Will" is crisp, clear, and robust. He offers a surprisingly effective treatment
of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," and if it isn't one of the album's
standouts, it is nonetheless, perfectly credible. "Judith" (from the movie of
the same name) is the album's one offering that was not, in fact, a great hit of
1965. It must have been a song that Pat Boone liked a lot, and it's not
difficult to imagine why. It's a deeply moving and hauntingly beautiful piece;
one of the most polished musical works Boone has ever put to record. The only
track from this album which has little to recommend it is "Make the World Go
Away." If Eddy Arnold had never cut the record, Boone's version might seem
convincing enough, But Arnold so clearly owns the definitive interpretation that
next to it, Boone's take is only so-so. Yet just the same Great Hits of 1965 is
