In STILL NOT GETTING ANY, Simple Plans very accessible punk-flavored pop seems
to spring full-formed from inside the adolescent brain. Petulant but somehow
good-natured, guitar-fueled tunes take on disillusionment, angst, eating
disorders, angst, lost love, angst, cynicism, and a bit more angst, but without
sounding all that miserable. Pierre Bouviers in-your-face vocals and the bands
crystal-clear instrumental arrangements get a lot of the credit, along with
easily audible teen-anthem rebel-yell lyrics. High points are the marvelously
expressive Shut Up and Crazy -- a song that addresses teen eating disorders with
lyrics like Tell me whats wrong with society/When everywhere I look I see/Young
girls dying to be on TV/They wont stop till theyve reached their dreams/Diet
pills, surgery... 

These guys can out-whine even your kids without sounding too annoying. Lyrics
that express cynicism and touchy desperation (meaning most of the lyrics on this
CD) are delivered with an infectious exuberance thats hard to dislike. Your
younger teens will love the message, and you might actually enjoy the music on

Producer Bob Rock gives the band sinewy sonic muscles on songs such as Perfect
World and Promise, and theres hardly a track in the bunch that doesnt sound like
