This is the third, and final, album in the Don Ellis Lost Tapes series. The
producers Gary Gillies and Nick Di Scala seemed to have learned from the
previous two albums in that the sound quality is drastically improved here. Like
it or not, poor sound quality can detract from the listening experience,
irrespective of the rarity of the source material.

Of especial interest on this volume is Ellis Hindustani Jazz Sextet arrangement
of ‘Bombay Bossa Nova’ expanded for big band from 1965, with
original Hindustani member Harihar Rao on sitar.

The piece, in 5/4 time, steadily gathers momentum, reminiscent of Ellis
‘Indian Lady’ on Electric Bath (Columbia) released two years later.

‘Its Time Again’ by Hank Levy from 1975, seems to have taken its
inspiration from Ellis ‘Pussy Wiggle Stomp’ from his 1968 album
Autumn (Columbia), while ‘Lets Do It This Way for A While’ captures
Art Pepper between stays in the slammer for drug addiction.

‘Vulcan’ taken from Ellis last recorded concert, was
‘enhanced’ with the addition of keyboards, drums and strings.
Whether you agree with this practice or not, the albums get-out clause is that
the original can be ‘downloaded from all platforms’. Id prefer it
the other way around; even so, this is without a doubt the best of the Lost
Tapes series.
