In this time of global unrest and upheaval, Downes turns to freedom songs and spirituals that invoke our human capacity for optimism, activism, and unification in the face of crisis. In Lara’s words: “We are strong. We are resourceful. We have come through darkness into light, over and over again. Let’s lean on our ancestors and the lessons they have taught us about hope, courage, and above all unity.†Spanning diverse musical traditions including classical, jazz, folk, country and R&B, Some Of These Days features collaborations with special guest artists including Toshi Reagon, Howard Fishman, PUBLIQuartet, and The Chapin Sisters, in arrangements by H. T. Burleigh, Hall Johnson, Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Nina Simone, Billy Taylor, Stephen Buck and Lara Downes. This deeply personal project from an artist known as “an explorer whose imagination is fired by bringing notice to the underrepresented and forgottenâ€, Some Of These Days taps into our collective experience, as well as Lara’s musical and personal history. In her own words: “This music pulls at so many parts of me — and pulls them together. The part that is a strong woman; the part that is an audacious artist. The part that is my parents’ daughter. This is my history, and ours.â€
