Two of guitarist Pat Martinos finest recordings for the Muse label (Live! and
Consciousness) are reissued in full on this double CD from 32 Jazz. Martino is
heard in 1974 performing seven numbers (plus a new alternate take of Along Came
Betty) with electric pianist Eddie Green, bassist Tyrone Brown and drummer
Sherman Ferguson. Martino brought in two originals and also performs John
Coltranes Impressions, a lengthy exploration of Eric Kloss Consciousness, Joni
Mitchells Both Sides Now, and two versions of the Golson tune. The earlier set
matches Martino with Brown, Ferguson and keyboardist Ron Thomas on three long
selections: two originals and the pop song Sunny. By the 1970s, Martino had his
own fresh sound and an adventurous style that was quite distinctive. He is heard
at the peak of his powers throughout this recommended twofer.~Scott Yanow
