In 2007, Jazzbeats reissued two albums by saxophonist Sonny Stitt and Chicago
organist Eddie Buster, which were originally released by Argo during the early
1960s. Sonny Stitt at the D.J. Lounge was recorded live in June 1961 with Johnny
Board blowing second tenor and Joe Shelton steering from behind the drums. Move
on Over the album after which the later compilation was named, was the fruit of
a studio session that took place on June 7, 1963 with alto saxophonist Nicky
Hill (featured on the ballad Love Letters), guitarist Joe Diorio and drummer
Gerald Donovan. This music is fairly typical of organ-combo jazz of the period,
as an extension of the standard set by Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Shirley Scott and
as soul groove/hard bop that was contemporaneous with the Gene Ammons/Jack
McDuff collaborations. Even if Stitts A Natural Fox seems more or less
melodically stunted, the overall flavor of this feel-good jazz is satisfying,
solid, and straight-ahead.
