Roger Miller might call this music depressive jazz. We hesitate to call it any
form of jazz lest we incur the wrath of the soul set. We couldnt honestly call
it country without offending some of the cats in the corn pone clan, so we
decided on the title It Ain t Necessarily Square. If nothing else it will
confuse you!
This is a collection of our very favorite t ines, our second venture into the
world of strictly instrumental music. Our first one was titled Playing It
Straight, a financial flop—maybe an artistic failure; how ever it did
give the Smothers Brothers an idea for a hit album. Anyway we won many new fans
with the straight album, and we hope they are happy with the music inside this
cover.
Ours is a style developed mostly backstage while waiting to do our comedy
routines. Instead of biting our nails we play. One of the secrets of whatever
success we have enjoyed as comics has been the fact that our audience knows
immediately that we are putting them on” with our planned goofs and sour
notes. Of course many critics have accused us of being frustrated
musicians—naturally we deny this. After all. we are playing music
constantly. In our act we play everything from country to classic, and we
usually find time between shows to sit in with the house bands for a go at the
swinging stiff.
