Wardruna’s sixth studio album, Birna, will be released on January
24, 2025, via Sony Music and By Norse Music. Inspired by his deep connection
with nature, lead composer Einar Selvik explores the voice of the bear in this
project.
Birna—Old Norse for "she-bear"—is dedicated to the forest's
guardian and protector of nature, symbolizing her struggles as she is slowly
pushed out of her habitat by modern society, drifting into a state of eternal
hibernation. This decline leads to a gradual decay of the forest, longing for
the return of its heartbeat—its guardian. Birna calls for her return.
The bear is a common figure in ancient northern myths and is revered by many
indigenous cultures as a totem animal, celebrated through rites and songs. Once
respected as our protector and guide to food sources, the bear was both feared
and admired.
The bear’s slow heartbeat—around nine beats per
minute—echoes throughout the album. This rhythm, rooted in natural cycles
and the worldview of ancient cultures, fuels Selvik’s creative
philosophy, aiming to plant new seeds while honoring old roots.
Combining ancient instruments and wisdom with modern soundscapes and natural
recordings, Birna offers a rare chance for self-reflection. It reminds us that
we are a part of nature, not above it, and encourages remembering as a way to
rediscover both new and forgotten insights.
