Trust Fund, led by singer-songwriter Ellis Jones, returns with Has It
Been A While?, his fifth album recorded in Sheffield with producer Joe Mackenzie
Todd and released on Tapete Records. This album marks a shift from Trust
Fund’s indie-rock sound to a more stripped-down approach, featuring
classical guitar, vocals, and string quartet arrangements by Maria Grig.
Jones showcases his lyrical finesse, especially in The Mirror, a duet with Celia
MacDougall of Radiant Heart. Describing the album as “quietly
ambitious,†Jones highlights his growth, stepping out of his comfort zone
to craft diverse and engaging music.
Fans of Nick Drake’s early works and Belle and Sebastian’s
folk-inflected sound will find familiarity, while the title track recalls Chet
Baker’s simplicity. This album follows the 2023 EP It Is What It Is,
compiling singles from 2022-2023, and offers twelve new songs that mark Trust
Fund’s revived creative phase.
