       Max Steiner, Austrian film composer, was born into the family of a
musical impresario and showed musical ability at an early age. He moved from
Austria to England in 1905 and then emigrated to America with the outbreak of
the First World War. His work in Hollywood became particularly successful, and
he became known as one of the leading film composers of his time. Steiner
believed that music should serve the dramatic content of a movie, not just fill
in the background. His scores for films such as King Kong, Symphony of Six
Million, and The Informer were praised for their careful integration with
visuals and enhanced dramatic effect. Steiner has also worked at Warner Bros.
composing music for films including Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and Mildred
Pierce. Although his later works began to sound old-fashioned, Steiner
maintained his status in the world of film composers and worked until 1965.
