Prisoner In The Street (Live) is the live soundtrack album accompanying
the concert documentary film of the same name, directed by French filmmaker
Jérôme Laperrousaz and released in 1980. The film was co-produced by Island
International and Médiane Films and premiered in France on 28 May 1980.
By the time of the album's release, Third World were at the height of their
international career: their soul-inflected reggae cover of the O'Jays' "Now That
We've Found Love" had reached the American R&B Top 10 and the British pop Top
10, with "Cool Meditation" following close behind in the UK charts. The concert
programme captures the group at the peak of their powers, drawing on key tracks
from the late 1970s — among them "96 Degrees In The Shade," "African Woman,"
and "Cold Sweat" — and showcasing their ability to move fluidly between roots
reggae, funk, and R&B. Prisoner In The Street proved to be the final release of
the band's tenure with Island Records, after which they signed with CBS. The
recording stands as a vital document of Third World's live energy during one of
the most celebrated periods of their career.
