The Best (released in Japan as A&M Digitally Remastered Best, cat. no.
POCM-1577) is an expanded compilation issued by A&M Records in 1998,
representing the most comprehensive survey of Captain & Tennille's A&M catalogue
available at that time.
Captain & Tennille — the husband-and-wife duo of "Captain" Daryl Dragon
(1942–2019) and Toni Tennille (b. 1940) — were among the defining acts of
1970s soft pop, earning five gold and platinum albums and a string of chart
hits. Daryl earned his "Captain" nickname from Beach Boys vocalist Mike Love for
his habit of wearing a ship captain's hat onstage. The duo's breakthrough came
with their 1975 cover of Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield's "Love Will Keep Us
Together," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and won the Grammy Award for
Record of the Year.
The compilation spans every major phase of their A&M tenure: early independent
singles from 1973–74 ("The Way I Want To Touch You," "Broddy Bounce,"
"Butterscotch Castle"), the peak-era smashes from Love Will Keep Us Together
(1975) and Song of Joy (1976), and album tracks from Come In From The Rain
(1977) and Dream (1978). Hits including "Lonely Night (Angel Face)" (US #3),
"Shop Around" (US #4), "Muskrat Love" (US #4), and "You Never Done It Like That"
document the duo's command of AM radio's melodic sensibility.
The set also features the duo's Spanish-language recordings — "Por Amor
Viviremos" and "Como Yo Quiero Sentirte" — a notable footnote in chart
history: "Por Amor Viviremos" charted simultaneously with the English original,
marking the first time two versions of the same single appeared in the charts
concurrently. The 1998 Japanese digitally remastered pressing reflects A&M's
broader effort to introduce the duo's catalogue to the CD generation with
enhanced audio fidelity.
