I can well remember the time when Mickey Gilleys only claim to fame was the fact
that he happened to be Jerry Lee Lewis cousin. No one seriously considered
Mickeys individual capabilities ... his piano and vocal styles were constantly
compared to Jerrys, and it appeared that Mickey would never be able to establish
his own identity as an artist. Time and some good records have taken care of
that . . . at least in this part of the country. Today, Mickey is recognized as
one of our most consistent record sellers, and a “big draw” wherever
he happens to be appearing. People enjoy his “way with a song.” his
flexible Keyboard work, and his willingness to exert all efforts to please a
crowd. Hes still Jerry Lee Lewiss cousin (and on the greatest of terms), and
certainly there is similarity in their singing and playing . . . but Mickey
Gilley has firmly carved himself un individual niche in everyones list of
favorites and is another of Houstons favorite son candidates for stardom. All
Mickey needs is one big national break . . . and this LP could be that break.
This package is a fine cross-section of his abilities; and if it falls on enough
attentive ears in all parts of the country, this Gilley boy will create the sume
excitement that Houston has known for the past few years. It has been my
personal pleasure to have had Mickey make many appearances on my shows, and I
can wish him nothing but tremendous success everywhere.
