It must have been about eighteen years ago. Thats right, because it was early 1950. Anyhow, I was doing school homework and listening to the radio at the same time when my attention to duty was distracted by a record called The Only Rose. The homework was instantly forgotten as I was flipped out of my mind by a fellow named Hank Snow singing unlike any artist Id ever heard before. At that time I was an aspiring young (?) steel-guitar picker, and I began telling my musician friends that if I ever had the opportunity to play professionally, Id rather play for Hank Snow than anybody else in the world. To make a long story short, the word reached Hank, we got together and, in a rose-colored daze, I found myself playing steel guitar for the greatest country singer in the business. The beginning of a long and treasured friendship introduced me to a man who was soon to become not only the No. 1 C&W artist internationally but one of the all-time greats of country music. I was fascinated by Hanks concern for behind-the-scenes details. When we recorded or made a personal appearance, everything had been carefully considered in advance. Thus, there were no haphazard performances. A recording session was pure pleasure because Hank always knew what he was going to do and how it was to be done - so there was no confusion or indecision as he cut hit after hit. His outstanding artistry is reflected by the fact that he has recorded for RCA Victor for over thirty years. Fantastic. Well, I tend to get carried away when discussing Hank Snow, and this could go on forever. One final remark. In the music business a song such as White Christmas. that people never get tired of and want to hear year after year, 1s called a “standard.†Hank Snow is a “Standard .’ Joe Talbot Tracklist: 1 01.
