An unflinching psychological thriller set amidst the underbelly of New York
City’s “Gilded Age,” THE ALIENIST follows Laszlo Kreizler
(Daniel Brühl, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, RUSH, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR), a
brilliant and obsessive “Alienist” in the controversial new field of
treating mental pathologies, who holds the key to hunting down a
never-before-seen ritualistic killer murdering young boys. Based on the
award-winning, fan-favorite novel by Caleb Carr, with standout performances from
Luke Evans (THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN) and Dakota Fanning (AMERICAN PASTORAL), THE
ALIENIST is a gripping, turn-of-the-century murder mystery like none other: the
story of the emergence of the world’s most powerful city that will stop
at nothing to bury its darkest secrets.
In THE ALIENIST, Luke Evans plays newspaper illustrator John Moore and Dakota
Fanning plays Sara Howard, an ambitious secretary determined to become the
city’s first female police detective. The series also stars Brian
Geraghty (THE HURT LOCKER) as police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, Douglas
Smith (MISS SLOANE) and Matthew Shear (MISTRESS AMERICA) as Marcus and Lucius
Isaacson, twin brothers who help unravel the disturbing mystery; Matt Lintz
(PIXELS) as Stevie, a tough, young boy employed by Dr. Kreizler as a driver and
errand boy; Robert Ray Wisdom (THE WIRE) as Cyrus, Kreizler’s valet, a
man with a dark past who has been reformed by Kreizler; and Q’orianka
Kilcher (THE NEW WORLD) as Mary, Kreizler’s mute maid with whom he shares
a special unspoken connection.
“The first thing I worked on was a suite to represent the streets of New
York,” continued Gregson-Williams. “The city was, at the turn of the
twentieth century, at the forefront of scientific discovery but was also a sense
of true anarchy in everything that is happening. I wanted discovery and change
to ring out with every note of the music. I played the double bass and violin
throughout the score. The double bass is so guttural and startling just like
being in the city at that time.”
Shot in Budapest, Hungary, THE ALIENIST is a co-production of Paramount
Television and Turner’s Studio T. BAFTA-nominee Jakob Verbruggen (BLACK
MIRROR) serves as director and executive producer along with Academy Award®
winner Eric Roth (FORREST GUMP), Academy Award® nominees Hossein Amini
(DRIVE) and E. Max Frye (FOXCATCHER), Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin and
Rosalie Swedlin, along with Chris Symes and Emmy® winner Cary Fukunaga (TRUE
DETECTIVE). Serving as co-executive producers on the series are Marshall
Persinger (RECTIFY) and Jamie Payne (THE DRIVER).

Also known in scoring circles for his orchestrations and conducting, Rupert
Gregson-Williams is a composer of film and television music including TVs Veep
and the DC Extended Universe blockbuster Wonder Woman. Like his brother Harry
Gregson-Williams, Rupert was a lead chorister in one of Britains great
traditional academic church choirs, that of St. Johns College, Cambridge. In
return for singing with the choir at daily services during the school term and
touring with it around the world, he received a scholarship to St. Johns
Colleges preparatory school and entrance to Cambridge. Unlike Harry, who
graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Rupert admits to being a
rebellious student who got thrown out of school more than once. He believed that
he had all the basic knowledge he needed and went to work as a professional
musician, mostly in rock & roll bands, after a stint as a teacher in Africa.
A friendship with composer Richard Harvey, which grew from their shared interest
in ethnic music and instruments, led him into film music. Rupert had been
intrigued by the use of classical music in film since Visconti used Mahlers
music in Death in Venice, and was happy to assist Harvey after the latter got
some work scoring for British television projects. The two worked together in
collaboration with Elvis Costello on G.B.H. and Jakes Progress, two films
directed by Alan Bleasdale. In the process, Rupert learned much about advanced
orchestration. His first original score was for an independent film by Genevieve
Jolliffe called Urban Ghost Story, which was a coming-of-age drama rather than a
horror picture. Rupert composed an intimate score, mainly for solo piano and
flutes, but of a substantial length at 50 minutes.
Following that, the iconic film composer Hans Zimmer asked him to join his
organization Media Ventures, which provided music for film, television,
advertisements, and other commercial uses, including the two-minute piece Rupert
wrote for the World Cup soccer finals in Japan. Gregson-Williams worked directly
with Zimmer on the score to The Prince of Egypt, composing certain sequences in
the film using Zimmers melodies to the composers specifications. Other film and
television projects followed for Gregson-Williams, including El Dorado, Virtual
Sexuality, Muppets from Space, Extremely Dangerous, and Hannibal.
In 2004, he gained notice with the highly lauded drama Hotel Rwanda, for which
he was bestowed the European Film Composer Award. From there, he scored such
notable films as 2006s Over the Hedge, 2007s Bee Movie, 2008s You Dont Mess with
the Zohan, and others. Gregson-Williams subsequently supplied the music for an
increasingly higher-profile set of films including 2010s Grown Ups and 2014s
Blended, as well as awards season fare like Mel Gibsons 2016 WWII drama Hacksaw
Ridge and Netflixs The Crown. In 2017, the soundtrack for superhero feature
Wonder Woman, which included Gregson-Williams score and the original song To Be
Human by Sia, landed on the Billboard 200 and the Top 10 of the soundtracks
chart. ~ Joseph Stevenson
