Paris road-to-bedroom label Promesses push the envelope again with a 31 track
survey of ambient and club music from all corners - ft. Safety Trance, Kelman
Duran, Bianca Scout, Amazondotcom, Brodinski, Hajj and many new names The
label’s 3rd almanac navigates rip-currents of prevailing styles from the
global south and phase shifts between far-flung styles that come together on
Paris dancefloors, after-parties and bedrooms. There’s a fuck tonne to
check here, ranging on one hand from the dembow body music of Arca’s spar
Safety Trance on ‘Lo Que Tú Queriás’ to the inimitable high
wire trot of Kelman Duran & Ans M’s outstanding ‘Dirty Dog’,
and on the other from Klein collaborator Bianca Scout’s pitching fractal
cut-up ‘be safe’ to the elegiac ambient dirge ‘Life as a
Death Ritual’ from Dawn Records’ Hajj. There’s a typically
compelling piece of concatenated tresillo trickery by Amazondotcom in the grimy
‘Prowler’, and a bass-boosted drill instrumental
‘Ativan’ by Brodinski & Modulaw, ‘floor-swilling triplets by
Ragazza XXI, and the squashed dembow noise of ‘Gash’ by
Sébastian Forrester & Apulati Bien, plus a sublime ambient ballad
‘miedo’ from pam3 produced by more eaze, and Taraneh’s
skudgy, acidic synth-pop to contend with.
