COMPILATION 'CUT LIVE AT GEARBOX'
The Valve Mastered 7s series is a collection of live studio recordings from the
Gearbox studios in London, utilising their famed all-valve (tube) signal chain.
With the recorded genres ranging from post-bop jazz to traditional Cuban music
to hip-hop, the series is an opportunity to explore different styles of music
from various artists. The “cut live” means that listeners can hear the band
in a room, capturing a special moment in time.
2nd Exit is Alfa Mist and Lester Duval’s duo project, which marries together
lo-fi hip hop samples and blissful jazz progressions, occasionally underscored
by soulful vocals from Kaya Thomas-Dyke. Whilst the duo typically make all their
beats electronically, with drums programmed by Lester, this recording was an
opportunity to play their music live. The pair, both fans of The Roots, like
their music to be “as live and realistic as possible.”
The one-off line-up was an organic grouping of musicians who had previously
collaborated with each other, or as Duval describes it, “a group of guys who
were around.” In this instance, Jordan Rakei on fender rhodes, Alex Crawford
on guitar, James Creswick on bass guitar, and Fabio De Oliveira on drums.
Complex premiered ‘Say It Is (Cut Live At Gearbox)’, saying it “plays out
just as it should, like a group of supremely talented friends jamming out and
seeing where it takes them.”
These recordings, cut live at Gearbox’s all-analogue studio, were done using
Mark Ronson’s Zelig studio at the time. Another special aspect includes the
somewhat unusual mic technique whereby the performance is captured by a trio of
fine vintage ribbon mics, loosely based on a Decca Tree format.
